The Dark Knight Rises Above Box Office Competition » Gossip - The cloud of sadness and shock that remains over The Dark Knight Rises, following the horrific actions of James Holmes in Colorado on July 21, did not keep this blockbuster from remaining atop the box office this weekend.

The third installment of Christopher Nolan's trilogy earned $64.1 million, taking its week-plus total so far to $289.1 nationwide.

By comparison's sake, The Dark Knight ($313.8 million) and The Avengers ($373.1 million) both took in more over their opening 10-day run.

But neither faced the sort of tragedy that has sadly enveloped The Dark Knight Rises, nor did either face competition from the Summer Olympics. Here is a look at the weekend's top five money makers:

  1. The Dark Knight Rises: $64.1 million
  2. Ice Age: Continental Drift: $13.3 million
  3. The Watch: $13 million

 The Dark Knight Rises

Box Office: "The Dark Knight Rises" Easily Retains Top Spot » Gossip - Still managing to churn out solid numbers following the tragic shooting rampage which claimed numerous lives in Aurora, Colorado on opening night, "The Dark Knight Rises" easily retained the top spot at the box office to begin the weekend of July 27-29, 2012.

Void of any serious threats to its pole position standing, Christopher Nolan's final Batman installment starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway nearly quadrupled the nearest competitor while notching an estimated $20.1 million on Friday and pacing towards a $66.7 million sophomore weekend box office total.

Situated in a distant second place standing is the Scott Speer directed dancing drama "Step Up Revolution," as the Summit Entertainment produced theatrical newcomer garnered $5.5 million on opening day which puts its projected first weekend earnings at a tepid $13.2 million.

Filling out the top five at the box office in expected totals are the just-released Vince Vaughn/Jonah Hill/Ben Stiller starring comedy "The Watch" ($13 million), followed by Twentieth Century Fox Animation/Blue Sky Studios' animated tale "Ice Age: Continental Drift" ($11.5 million) and Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis' talking teddy bear film "Ted" ($6.2 million).

Review: 'Dark Knight Rises' Is the Best Batman Yet » Movie Gossip

Review: 'Dark Knight Rises' Is the Best Batman Yet » Movie Gossip | Dark Knight Rises
 Dark Knight Rises

Review: 'Dark Knight Rises' Is the Best Batman Yet » Movie Gossip - Seven years ago Batman Begins proved a comic book movie could be stark and authentic. Four years ago The Dark Knight proved one could be Oscar-worthy. Now with nothing left to prove, Christopher Nolan's final entry in the Batman trilogy is flat out the biggest, baddest, greatest comic book film ever made.

The story, set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, shows Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) in exile, living as a Howard Hughes-type. He is still despondent over losing his love, Rachel Dawes, whom he couldn't save. Walking with a cane, Bruce has retired the Batsuit (in an awesome underwater vault) and wallows in depression while Gotham City has enjoyed a crime-free bliss despite his absence.

Wayne's brooding lends a layer of humanity to the character that's much more cinematic than the genius playboy of Dark Knight. As in Batman Begins, Wayne is as interesting as the villains. When he's coaxed out of retirement by Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and a young idealistic cop named John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), there's a palpable vulnerability to the character, made more apparent by Alfred's (Michael Caine) dismay at the decision. Bruce's father-figure predicts "pain and tragedy" and boy is he right.

The instrument of that pain and tragedy is Bane (Tom Hardy), the hulking experimental powerhouse who is Batman's greatest test in terms of sheer physicality.

Hardy's Bane is not as compelling as Heath Ledger's Joker, but he exudes a dominating power that "the clown" could not match. The Joker killed Batman's love and psychologically toyed with him, but the caped crusader's life was never in real danger. Bane is different. Trained by the League of Shadows, as Wayne was, he is physically superior to Batman and much more threatening, staring out ferociously from behind his signature mask.

The presence of Bane, who is unveiled in a majestic mid-air prologue, and the weakness of Bruce Wayne set the stage for The Dark Knight Rises to enter uncharted territory. The possibility of Batman's defeat hovers over the first half of the film like a storm cloud and by the time he and Bane come face to face, you fear for the hero.

The Dark Knight Rises has the kind of substance only made possible by mortality. To give Rises its sense of doom, Nolan had to leave behind the "fun" of his previous films and other comic book movies. This will dismay some viewers, but it's a necessary and poignant tone to set for a final chapter. The peril of the story depends on it and it punctuates the elemental battle between good and evil.

That's not to say there is no fun. Anne Hathaway supplies a needed respite from the dark tone of the film as Selina Kyle, "The Cat," as newspapers dub her following a string of cat burglaries. She springs Wayne from the doldrums, posing as a maid and stealing his mother's necklace (the same one from Batman Begins). She is the film's most dynamic character, a morally ambiguous figure unseen in the previous two films.

Bane takes over Gotham City, sending it into the kind of chaos the Joker could only dream of. The film's third act is a triumph as Batman recovers from his greatest defeat. As Bruce Wayne's father says in Batman Begins, "We fall so we can pick ourselves back up again," and when the Dark Knight rises, so does the audience, cheering him to the echo.

Two things to keep in mind here: First, Rises should be seen in a theater, preferably on an IMAX screen as Nolan intended. Second, the film is so multi-layered, it's important to see the first two movies in the trilogy before this one. Nolan and brother/co-screenwriter Jonathan Nolan bring the neomodern realization of the iconic Bat full-circle and nearly every major plot point references events from the first two films. Part of the satisfaction that comes with Rises' spectacular, slightly unoriginal, but nuanced conclusion is wrapped up within what happens in the past.

The Dark Knight Rises is the first comic book adaptation where the end is not a foregone conclusion. Nolan layers his story expertly and surprises with so many plot twists, the hero's eventual victory is never assured. His conclusion remains thoroughly gratifying, adding needed background to Bane's character while keeping the Bat firmly in the middle of everything as all the subplots and ancillary characters converge.

Rises doesn't have any loose ends. Questions are answered unpredictably and confidently. Nolan had a plan when he set out to make Batman Begins in 2004. With each film, he's evolved and his finale is the culmination of those years of experience. It's the marvelous result of a visionary at the very top of his game.

“Gangster Squad” Trailer: Pulled from Movie Theaters » Gossip - It’s one of the most anticipated movies of the fall season, but “Gangster Squad” won’t have a trailer running in theaters anytime soon.

According to a report, the mass shooting at “The Dark Knight Rises” premiere in Colorado last night has caused concern over how a similar scene in the Sean Penn flick would be received.

“Gangster Squad” is based on the true story of mobster Mickey Cohen’s takeover of Los Angeles and the police force that brought him down.

Warner Bros. is said to be working on a new trailer, and it’s not certain if the scene in question will still be in the film when it hits theaters in September.

Hot New Trailer: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn & Jonah Hill In ‘The Watch’ » Gossip

Hot New Trailer: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn & Jonah Hill In ‘The Watch’ » Gossip - I first heard about Ben Stiller’s new movie in a not-too-pleasant way: they had to change the trailer because it was originally set to be released right around the time of the Trayvon Martin shooting. I think this trailer makes it pretty clear that ‘The Watch’ (which also stars Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill) is very different from that tragedy.

‘The Watch’ is a sci-fi comedy: Ben, Vince, and Jonah (or rather, their characters) are looking out for some type of alien invasion. Does this look good to you? On one hand, I think all of these guys are funny. Sometimes the humor veers a little too much into adolescent boy territory, though. The premise of ‘The Watch’ alone makes me worried about that.

Keira Knightley’s “Anna Karenina” Trailer: Watch Now! » Gossip - She seems to love period pieces, so it’s no wonder Keira Knightley is brilliant in the new trailer for her forthcoming film “Anna Karenina.”

Also starring Jude Law, the much-anticipated flick is an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s work of the same name, and is directed by Joe Wright.

And with both a trailer and a poster being released, it seems “Anna Karenina” is already garnering buzz ahead of its November 9th limited release.

Per the synopsis, “The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.”

He's been a mainstay in the world of cinema for years, and Johnny Depp was toasted at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, California on Sunday night (June 3).

After rocking the Gibson Amphitheatre venue stage during a performance with The Black Keys, the "Dark Shadows" star was then presented with the MTV Generation Award bestowed unto him by Aerosmith rockers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

During his acceptance speech, Johnny jokingly (we hope!) said, "I've got to thank MTV for this. This is quite an amazing honor, truly. It's like a get out of the business award. 'All right, you've done too much.' Clearly, based on the clips, there's nothing wrong with me."

The soon-to-be 49-year-old added, "I just thank you very much. And it's an honor to be presented by these two legends, Steve and Joe, and these up and coming legends, [The Black Keys], so thank you very much."

In receiving the network's top honor, Depp joins previous Generation Award honorees including Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
